Orlando limousine
August 28th, 2008
TORRANCE, Calif. — In a special July issue, LCT Magazine has broken new ground in the limousine industry by naming not only the largest fleets in America, but also a Whos Who list in chauffeured transportation. LCTs Whos Who includes Mike Bedard of Ford and Vince Wolfington, chairman of the board of Carey International.
Through this custom integration, Odyssey, the predominant ground
transportation back-office system in the US, will now make mobile credit
card transactions available to users at the point of sale — providing
real-time authorization, immediate payment, reduced transaction fees,
increased productivity and an even higher level of professional customer
service. “GT3 is always striving to improve operational efficiencies within
the transportation industry. This integration increases the benefits and
savings our customers get from Odyssey. The best part of this solution is
that the driver can complete the entire transaction before the passenger
leaves the car, and it all ties back into Odyssey,” stated Apurva Patel,
Chief Executive Officer of GT3. The initial product will be available for
use with RIM BlackBerry(TM) handhelds.
MobileCharge.Net, the wireless point-of-sale software from MobileVision, is
bundled with IPCs integrated mobile credit card swipe and thermal printer
hardware (model PP55-MS) and works with wireless PDAs running RIM
BlackBerry(TM), Palm(TM) or Windows Mobile operating systems. This turn-key
solution gives service industry and mobile sales professionals the ability
to take secure, real-time transactions in the field. Direct connections to
merchant providers, processors and gateways allow MobileCharge.Net to bring
secure credit card processing (and other functions normally performed by
back-office staff) to the workforce at card-present transaction rates –
resulting in immediate cost savings for end users.
MobileVision, a preferred software partner of IPC, worked closely with IPC
and GT3 to seamlessly integrate IPCs mobile hardware and the
MobileCharge.Net point-of-sale software with the Odyssey back-office
management system. This new addition to Odyssey is extremely simple to use
and will become a vital part of the daily business process for ground
transportation service providers.

Affordable housing. Low cost of living. High quality of life. The combination of these three things sets the Fort Wayne housing market apart. Add a wide variety of options into the equation and you have a truly good value for your housing dollars. A recent home price analysis by the National Association of REALTORS(R) revealed that the Fort Wayne housing market is in excellent shape, with a potential for significant housing equity gains, a very favorable home price-to-income ratio and an even better mortgage servicing cost-to-income ratio. The same report shows that the region added an estimated 15,000 new housing units in the past five years, approximately 12,000 of which were single-family dwellings. New developments continue to pop up in suburban areas surrounding the city. Conveniently located medical facilities, schools, libraries, parks, retail stores and restaurants add to the sense of community.
ow-priced real estate and an easier pace of life convinced Tim and Lisa Wilk to choose Topeka over Denver and Grand Junction, Colo. Car dealer Ed Bozarth offered to transfer Tim Wilk, 38, an automotive technician, to one of his dealerships. The Wilks picked Topeka because they said they believe the community offers a better lifestyle for less money. This spring, they bought a three-bedroom, two-bath house at 2631 S.E. 32nd for $119,500. The house has nearly 1,800 square feet; a two-car garage; and a big yard for their son, three dogs and a cat.

SWINGING mortgage payments isnt easy in the Bay Area with the incredibly high cost of housing here. Thats why some home buyers are turning to their parents for help with a home loan. No doubt, any type of loan made to a friend or relative can turn into an ugly mess if the borrower doesnt pay the money back for one reason or another. Private mortgages, which can be made by either a relative or friend, are legally binding and secured by the underlying real estate. The borrower signs a promissory note that sets out the terms of repaying the mortgage over a set time. The promissory note is secured by the propertys deed of trust filed with the county clerks office.
Theres never been a better time to buy a home, with mortgage rates at their lowest for 30 years. Kenneth Clarkes 0.25 per cent cut in interest rates last week prompted an immediate response from the countrys biggest lender. The Halifax dropped its standard mortgage rate to 6.99 per cent. And the second-largest lender, the Abbey National, cut its rates to 7.04 per cent for loans below pounds 60,000, 6.99 per cent above. The lowest rates are still offered by the direct lenders, with Direct Line charging 6.25 per cent and Bradford Bingley Mortgages Direct charging 5.99 per cent.

Say the words gadgets for women to most men and rather quickly schoolboy humour takes over. But during the last year we have witnessed a huge change in British female purchasing habits: women now spend three times more on gadgets than on cosmetics; there are more female gamers than men and, flying in the face of conventional marketing wisdom, 91 per cent of women say the colour of the gadget is utterly unimportant — which means that just producing a pink version of a product isnt going to work any more. No woman would dream of bringing her pink laptop into a meeting. Its about sleek and sophisticated design like the BlackBerry Pearl. Women are tired of products that pink up and dumb down. So steer well clear of Swarovski crystal-encrusted mobile phones and Hello Kitty laptops if you are looking for a gadget gift that will endear you to your wife/partner/ mother/sister this Christmas.

A PATENTLY PERFECT PROFESSION Still, another option intrigued her-a law career. “I decided I wanted an entire change,” says Feeman, now a patent lawyer for the Silicon Valley law firm Howrey Simon. At the time Feeman looked at the move not as the next step in her engineering career but as a clean break, she says. In fact, she hadnt even planned on specializing in patent law, a route commonly taken by engineers because it allows them to apply their technical skills to the law. Feeman initially preferred more “touchy-feely” law and viewed patent law as merely a fall-back option. As a student at Boston College Law School, she developed a passion for civil rights and public interest work, and outside the classroom became involved in the petition process to get clemency for some battered women who had murdered their husbands.

Kurt Murray has been involved in sports and fitness his entire life. Hailing from Perkiomenville, Pennsylvania, he holds a Bachelor of Sciences degree in kinesiology from Penn State University (Notice the cap emblem). He earned his AFAA Personal Training Certification in 1997 and has climbed the ladder in just over a years time to become Provider Program Director at AFAAs headquarters in Sherman Oaks, California. “Fitness has always been an important part of my life,” Murray says. “I played a lot of sports all through school-soccer, swimming, track and skiing, for example.” These days, however, Murrays athletic endeavors tend to be more daring. “I like a little danger, so I do repelling on weekends. I also roller blade and hike for fun, but Id love to train for and compete in an Ironman triathlon.” When it comes to his personal training clients, Murray has noticed a trend among peoples approaches to fitness. “Some people are very impatient. Thanks in part to gimmicky infomercials and believing everything they read, many think change will happen overnight,” he says. “Its a matter of altering your overall lifestyle, as well as addressing the connection between body and mind. Achieving these goals is an ongoing process.”

Useful tables of information and focused lists of suggested readings. Emphasis on such techniques as mechanical control of pests, uses of beneficial insects and pheromones to control pests, traps, and non-toxic compounds as alternatives to toxic chemical. Interesting section on how and why weeds survive so well.
Modern pest control is often termed IPM–which can be defined as a coordination of several management functions to: * Resolve these infestations with short-term control(s). * Reduce or eliminate the causes of infestation with long-term resolutions.
Rodent control is taking some interesting and not so encouraging turns. There is an initiative that will be introduced in California on the November 1998 ballot (assuming it gets the 500,000 signatures needed, which is a slam dunk in California). It is called an Initiative to Ban Cruel Traps. This initiative, in a nutshell, will make it illegal to use a body gripping trap. one that grips the mammals body or body part, including, but not limited to, steel-jawed leghold traps, padded-jaw leghold traps, Conibear traps, and snares. This initiative also states that, it is illegal for any person, including employees of the federal, state, county or municipal government, to use or authorize the use of any steel-jawed leghold trap, padded or otherwise, to capture any game mammal, fur-bearing mammal, non-game mammal, protected mammal, or any dog or cat. Now, stop and reread that paragraph and think about it for a minute. This initiative decides for us that we cant control agricultural fur-bearing pests any longer. For that matter, it specifically states that you cant trap anything that has fur on it for any reason, and that the U.S. Fish Wildlife Service, State Department of Fish Game and your local county ag commissioner or county trapper cant do it either. It does make provision for the protection of human health and safety (pretty considerate - you know how vicious those gopher and mole attacks on children have been lately), and it will allow you to use mouse traps in your basement. Oh, and by the way, it introduces two chemicals that can no longer by used - Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide. What are these used for? Well, its not rodent control. The state has been experimenting with these two chemicals for coyote control. They make a collar to put around a lambs neck. If the animal is unfortunate enough to be a victim of a coyote attack and the coyote punctures the collar its lights out for the sheep killer. The point here is precedent - get these two and then work your way on to household chemicals for insect and rodent control and sweep everything up in between.Since this is not a political editorial, all I can say is watch out for this one. Agriculture will lose big time, so tell a friend and lets make sure that we dont get tied down by bad law written by extremists. If you want a copy of this initiative yourself, again, hit me on the e-mail, and Ill send you a copy. You can read it yourself and decide on your own. I think it is very important that we dont make our decision based on whats on TV. Hollywood is anti-trapping and they have a lot of money to spend to support their position. If you want a recent case history lesson you may look at the fine State of Colorado, which had a similar initiative pass last year by a 51% margin. After the smoke cleared, it was disclosed that Hollywood spent just a little over a quarter million dollars to promote the initiative. All the local state and county representatives, combined with the agriculture and fur trapping industries, could muster was $48,000, and they lost.

Palm oil trails only soy as the source of the worlds leading cooking oil, and in Colombia, the industry hopes demand grows at home and abroad, especially in the United States, which producers here see as a developing export market. When you see that palm oil accounts for 25% of the global cooking-oil market, youll be surprised to learn that the United States accounts for just 1%, says Fedepalma President Jens Mesa. The United States has really never consumed palm oil, so why not launch a strong campaign to tackle this foreign market? By comparison, palm oil represents 30% of the European cooking-oil market, according to Fedepalma. Soy producers in the United States have fought a decades-long attack against palm-oil producers, accusing them of selling products that are bad for the cardiovascular system, Mesa says. Such campaigns are ill intentioned, based largely on studies made on animal fats and their conclusions take aim at the palm Mesa says. The American Heart Association, however, recommends reduced palm-oil consumption.

In Japan, textile products in a new category helpful to beauty and health have made their appearance. Fuji Spinning Co., Ltd. (Fujibo) has commercialized its vitamin-finished fabric “V-UP” and that was the start of this phenomenon. Subsequently, each firm has presented textile products with aromas to create a good feeling or with special ingredients to make the burning of fat easier. Later, this boom disappeared. Then in 2001, Fujibo announced “V-UP”. Its catch phrases in selling were “wearing vitamins” and “Vitamin C-formulated fabrics.” Vitamin C keeps the generation of melamine in the human body under control and exhibits skin whitening effects. Vitamin C functions to promote the synthesis of collagen and to restrain the decomposition of collagen, while it is effective in preventing wrinkles on the skin. The anti-oxidation effects exhibited by the sebum can also ward off sunburn. Even so, Vitamin C itself is unstable because it is weak against heat and oxidizes against light. Consequently, a pro-vitamin which precedes Vitamin C is used in manufacturing. Being oil -soluble, a pro-vitamin fixed onto fabrics is absorbed into the skin. The following mechanism is the change of the pro-vitamin into Vitamin C by various internal enzymes after its entry into the human body.
WITH ninety per cent of dieters regaining all or part of their lost weight within five years, there is huge pressure to find new health and beauty regimes that last. And no matter how many times we tell ourselves that no one is perfect we still cant help hoping that one day we will be happy with our bodies. We model our dreams for our bodies on celebrities and people in the public eye but rarely do we hear about their imperfections such as bunions, wonky toes, cellulite or wrinkles.
personal life coaching
August 21st, 2008
LIFE isnt easy. It may sound pat, but its true. So therefore its a bit surprising that more of us dont have life coaches to guide us through the complex maze that is modern-day living. For those unfamiliar with a concept which is more common in America than it is in the UK, a “life coach” could be seen as the friend who always encourages you - a cross between a mentor and a practical adviser. OK, so you pay them for their advice, but they do always have your best interests at heart. For Fiona Reed, an Edinburgh-based coach who has been helping clients for almost two years, her role usually sees her operating as a “friend” with no vested interest and a pro-active approach to lifes problems. Forget psychiatrists and psychotherapists (after all, you know you cant blame your mother for absolutely everything), life coaching involves a positive approach to those issues in a persons life that require practical change.
There are around 3,000 “life coaches” in America, and numbers are rising. Even so, coaches in the States are still waiting for the day when people stop saying, “What is life-coaching?” and ask, “Who is your coach?” A coach is a hybrid of business advisor, mentor, therapist, counsellor - and grandma, who thinks youre perfect and wants you to be happy. Ive worked with counsellors for years, writing about their work. I admire it enormously, but whats exciting about coaching is the directness. A counsellor could have your problems and solutions taped in minutes, but months can pass as you are gentled through the process of discovering it for yourself. Coaches instead are straight-talking (but always positive), and will say what strikes them as the truth from the first session. Coaching is achievement- focused. It feels adult, and fast - you are encouraged to take action from day one to become more profitable, healthier, deal with unfinished emotional business, have more fun, make better relationships, or whatever is holding you back. Coaches are trained to handle anything but they tend to specialise in certain professions or life situations. It can be surprising. With my coach, Madeleine Homan, who specialises in creative types, I addressed my procrastination and writing blocks in our first talk. She didnt advise me about how to work harder, but asked me to take more time off - making one working day a week my “creative day” when I do whatever appeals. I tried out this and other suggestions, and just seven weeks later I work with more pleasure, less angst and increased effectiveness. I feel healthier, more energetic and more relaxed. Madeleine is in New York (not so crazy, as a half-hour call costs under pounds 4), but there are coaches in Britain (most working for corporates), 50 training with Coach University, the American “virtual” course, carried out through teleconferencing and e-mail. Some come from caring professions, but felt it made sense to look at practical and financial issues as well as the emotional. Some began as business consultants but couldnt ignore personal issues. They have been coaching for years, usually face-to-face, but some are starting to offer a telephone service. Sherrie Charlton is a UK coach. Vaughn Khelifa, who works in the pharmaceutical industry, was coached by her for 18 months.” I thought it would be like training - being lectured to by an expert. Instead Sherrie helped me think differently: what am I looking for from this; is this the best approach for that person? At the end, I ask myself if I handled it the best way, or how I could improve on it. It has given me confidence and skills that have helped me progress in my job and develop even better relationships with my husband and daughter.” Sherrie believes you have to look to your own development when helping others develop, and spends a quarter of her work hours on this. She is doing a Masters in personal and organisational development as well as a Coach University course. The training is fascinating in itself (Ive signed up). It is commonsense, with a spiritual slant, underpinned by a philosophy of personal excellence. Vocabulary can be puzzling (or a source of joy). One student supplied a word to a trainer who thanked her for “up-languaging me”; Madeleine thought I was confessing to promiscuity when I said I was a “slut”, though I was only admitting to cobwebs and clutter. But the concepts are universal and living with integrity one that is key. Bob Griffiths, a coach for 12 years, can make referrals, and represents Coach University in Britain: 0171 787 8599; coach@willow.demon. co.uk. Sherrie Charlton: 0181 868 0085. Coach University training: 0171 434 0858.
At prenatal classes, expert nurses inform you of what to expect. Each stage of labour, along with the emotions involved, is outlined. The labour at the beginning of life. Sure as taxes, the pain will come. Life is proceeding as it should. There is a beginning and a progression. Just around the stage called transition is the hardest part, the pressure, the wish to stop or the choice to push forward. They may tell you not to push. You may hold back, against gravity, and against Mother Nature. Resisting. We have an opportunity to start in pre-dialysis clinics. We teach. We support. We try to maximize understanding and optimize good health. End stage renal failure will come. Planning for this phase can be as natural as planning any life event. Then there is the labour of beginning treatment. A patient and family undergo major shifts in lifestyle. Crises come and, hopefully, dissipate.

TransportationHistorically, societies have always located near water, due partly to the fact that water enables more efficient travel compared to going over land. Waterways are critically important to the transportation of people and goods throughout the world. The complex network of connections between coastal ports, inland ports, rail, air, and truck routes forms a foundation of material economic wealth worldwide.
Looking at freight transport, there was a significant increase in maritime and railway transport, while the volume of road transport remained roughly at the level from last years second quarter. After the volume of maritime transport fell by a fifth in the first quarter, it rose by 14.5% in the second quarter of 2007, year on year. The volume of transport has become more volatile in recent years, but the volume of goods carried has not contracted significantly relative to the global conjuncture witnessed in the industry in 2005. Maritime transport is one of the minor transport modes in Slovenia. Railway freight transport grew by 14.9% in the first quarter and continued to grow strongly in the second quarter. Harbour transport recorded a modest increase, while road freight transport did not increase in year-on-year terms in the second quarter, partly because of the very high volume of road transport seen in the second quarter of 2006. Data also show that the expansion in this mode of transport, boosted by the abolition of restrictions upon Slovenias accession to the EU, has moderated somewhat this year Slovenia is near the top among EU countries according to the volume of road freight transport per capita. The assessment refers to the volume of freight transport expressed in tonne kilometres, undertaken by freight vehicles registered in a given country. It measures carriage by domestic freight vehicles in the country of registration and abroad, and not the volume of transport within the territory of a given country. In 2006 by far the most per capita road shipments were performed by carriers registered in Luxembourg (18,766 tkm; see graph). Slovenian carriers (with three times lower freight transport per capita) were ranked second and performed 58.9% more transport than the average carrier in the EU. The high intensity of road freight transport in Slovenia is the result of the surging growth rates of road transport, particularly in 2004 and 2005 (27.9% and 22.5%). From the second quarter of 2004 to the second quarter of 2007, the volume of shipments carried by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia increased by 53.8%. Domestic transport rose by 23.9%, while international transport climbed by as much as 63.8%. Within international transport, the largest (3.2-fold) increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage (transport performed in another country). The well-developed shipping industry in Slovenia is attributable to Slovenias favourable position at the crossing of European corridors V and X. Transport on these corridors is increasing, and Slovenian carriers are exploiting new business opportunities. With Slovenias entry into the EU, a number of administrative barriers for carriage within the EU were removed for Slovenian carriers (especially the procurement of a limited number of licences). Slovenia also negotiated the possibility to perform cabotage in the EU-15 countries, which the Eastern European countries that joined the EU together with Slovenia will only be allowed to do after the end of a five-year period.

Self Hypnosis
Hypnosis, a medium or modality through which you may become more alert to your own thoughts and feelings, can be appropriate for a number of health conditions, especially ones with emotional or psychological components. While the success rate varies, many health care professionals recommend considering hypnosis for the following: Asthma: Studies suggest that hypnosis may be one effective treatment for asthma, especially when there are emotional and psychological factors involved. Childbirth: Hypnosis can help ease the stress and pain of childbirth. The ASCH estimates that for some women, hypnosis can work as the sole analgesic for childbirth. It not only eliminates the risk posed by drugs, but it may reduce labor time by two to four hours. (It can be used in conjunction with natural childbirth approaches.)

inflatable dinghy
August 17th, 2008
Holidaymakers using an inflatable dinghy rescued a man who was seriously injured after “tombstoning” more than 100ft into the sea from one of Britains most famous coastal landmarks. Hundreds watched from the beach near Lulworth Cove in Dorset as the 26-year old man floundered in the water after leaping from the top of Durdle Door, a natural limestone arch that juts 400ft into the sea. Kevin Burt, station officer of the Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team, said the man, who has not been named, was lucky to have survived the drop on Saturday. Although the tide was on its way in, the seabed around Durdle Door was uneven, with many shallows and rocks.
IN THE Pacific last Sunday morning, just before Greenpeace entered the exclusion zone around Frances nuclear test site at Mururoa atoll, a small inflatable dinghy took to the water and slipped silently away. At the helm was the little-known man who has steered Greenpeace to its present position as the worlds most famous environmental group. Four inflatables had been launched from the flagship; three were intercepted and confiscated and the crew of the fourth were arrested after they had managed to get on to the atoll and scale the rig used to drill the holes for the atomic explosions which France now plans to restart after a three- year lull. But it is what Greenpeace refers to only as “the fifth inflatable” that threatens the real trouble. As the rest of the fleet turned away from the atoll, it kept going. There were three people on board: Chris Robinson, Henk Haazen - both veterans of the Auckland blast - and a man going by the name of David Fraser who is in fact David McTaggart, the honorary chairman of Greenpeace.

At ten to five the sun rose. Me and the boy were seated in our directors chairs on the beach, mourning the embers of our dying fire. We were about midway along a five-mile curve of shingle, about 30 yards from the sea. There wasnt a puff of wind; the cigarettes-worth of smoke from our fire went more or less straight up. The waves collapsing on the shore were piddly. In spite of their lack of vigour, however, every other one washed up hundreds of tiny silver fishes that died in shining rows on the wet shingle. After the sun had cleared the hill by about half an inch (about quarter past) a figure appeared beside the shore to our right. He was casting his rod into the sea, catching a fish immediately, tossing it back, and moving along again. He was coming towards us. As he got nearer, we could see that apart from a satchel he was nude.

A house in Hampstead that has hidden its north London origins behind a new Japanese personality, has just come on the market. Two adjoining houses in Fitzjohns Avenue were replanned and redesigned with specially selected materials. A stream runs along the full length of the properties (which are reached by means of a slatted bridge) and a sunken Japanese garden is filled with pebbles, ferns and bamboo. One of the houses only is for sale at an asking price of pounds 435,000 through Goldschmidt Howland (0171-435 4404). The main bedroom has a low-level custom-made Japanese platform bed and sliding shoji cupboards made from yellow rice paper. Housebuilders have just had their busiest month for two years and the prospects look good, according to the latest report for the House Builders Federation. New homes have increased their market share to almost 13 per cent from the 10 per cent at which they had been stuck since 1988. John Stewart, an independent housing economist and author of the report, says they are managing to fill a gap in the market because of sensitive prices and attractive marketing. “When I did some research with the Halifax we found a lack of confidence among intending homebuyers: they were not sure they would be able to sell their present homes. In buying a new home the hassle-free factor is very important,” he said. This bears out evidence from builders such as Barratt of a new breed of buyer at the top end of the market who, frustrated by the lack of good property available, is turning to developers for the first time. The success of Barratts award-winning development, Lakeside Grange, in Weybridge, Surrey, looks like being matched by its latest enterprise on the River Thames at Chiswick. Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) are essentially closed-end real estate funds. They invest in commercial, office and/or residential properties. REITs typically generate high income (10%-to-15%) and some provide even higher returns. Because of their high yields, REITs are currently very popular. Lately, some REITs have been yielding over 10%. Here are some examples of REITs: Your stock broker should be able to provide more information. Money Digest publishes articles on REITs, income and royalty trusts on a regular basis.

The research reported in this issue is generally focused in two areas. First, several authors look at the role of publicly traded real estate securities in portfolio management for investors in direct real estate equities. Simon Stevenson, in The Long Term Advantages to Incorporating Indirect Securities in Direct Real Estate Portfolios examines the impact of REIT investment in both an optimal and a more probable world. His findings are interesting because they show that REITs bring improved performance to portfolios that look more like the NCREIF portfolio while their marginal value to an optimized direct portfolio may not be evident. The other interesting finding is a significant performance improvement brought by the addition of multi-national property securities to a domestic direct portfolio. Should investors approach an asset class in the context of their portfolio goals? Timothy Craft explores that issue in The Role of Private and Public Real Estate in Pension Plan Portfolio Allocation Choices. He examines the portfolio allocation choice in the context of a plans pension liabilities. One interesting result is a resolution of the dichotomy between standard optimization models that often argue for high real estate allocations and the typically lower allocations found in existing plan portfolios. Michael Seiler, James Webb and Neil Myer test the expectation that private real estate portfolios can be adjusted with real estate securities in Can Private Real Estate Portfolios Be Rebalanced/Diversified Using Equity REIT Shares? They conclude that REITs are a worthwhile addition to mixedasset portfolios but that they do not bring the ability to effectively rebalance or create marketneutral portfolios.

Rules, which was founded in 1798 and specialises in game, oysters, pies and puddings, is at the back of Covent Garden, and is rather wonderful inside, especially if you are fed up with the sparse, blond-wood decor of most restaurants these days. The gorgeous Edwardian dining-room is a fabulous jumble of periods, styles and fashions, with heavy burgundy furniture, antlers, bits of stuffed animals, and wall-to-wall paintings of horses and fox-hunts and ships and the British countryside and stuff. There is also this enormous, bizarre oil painting — actually, its more a mural — of Margaret Thatcher, with the Falklands behind her, dressed warrior-style and with the most scary, whopping thighs. I am seated beneath it. Given the choice, I dont think I would choose to dine under Margaret Thatchers thighs. Given the choice, I dont think there is anything I would choose to do under Margaret Thatchers thighs. In short, under Margaret Thatchers thighs is simply not a place I would ever choose to be. But here I am. (I later discover that the artist, John Springs, also did the picture of me at the top of this page. It does not include my thighs. Thats my head. ) Egon arrives. Egon first came to Britain from Budapest in the 1950s, when cooking here was done without any feeling or care, tinned fruit juice was deemed a reasonable starter, and he was once asked to share a spoon (tied on to a bit of string) when he ordered a cup of tea at the Victoria station buffet. He takes his place beneath Margarets thighs. Egon is small, old, dainty, tiny. I worry for him under those thighs. Those thighs could do him in like a nutcracker doing in a nut. Crr. . . rrrr. . . ack! Given the choice, its not how Id want to go. But he is used to fearsome women. In the 1960s he toured the country as part of a cookery panel with Fanny Cradock. He once introduced a kindly cricket commentator, that nights chair of the panel, to her. This is so-and-so, said Egon. Oh, fuck off, said Fanny. It was totally shocking. The word “fuck” was not used very much then. The commentator looked at Fanny, looked at me, then said, “Im going back.” I had to drive him to the station. Anyway, he does like the room. Its got a warm feeling, he says. He scans the menu. This is not so good. He does not like the sound of todays special: freshwater prawn and diver scallop curry. If you are keen to say your prawns are freshwater and your scallops are dived-for, he says, youre saying you are proud of your ingredients. But if you are proud of your ingredients — delicately flavoured shellfish, particularly — why would you want to kill the flavours off in a curry? I think they are only pretending to be proud. I am beginning to get a picture. To start, he orders the mushroom and chestnut soup (£6.95), so I do likewise.
My unease was heightened by my having lunched shortly before the awards ceremony at both Le Gavroche and Chez Nico to find out just what was being offered by these two top-ranked restaurants. The answer was quintessentially French cuisine in formal, impeccably presented establishments, with prix-fixe menus available at lunchtime at both. Le Gavroche occupies basement premises in Upper Brook Street. It is traditionally furnished and decorated, so as to appear very ancien regime today, but tables are spaced well apart, chairs are comfortable, and service, under the watchful, totally professional but benevolent eye of Silvano Giraldin, is a pleasure to receive. Cooking is now in the hands of young Michel Roux, the London-born son of Gavroche founder Albert Roux and the nephew of the other Michel Roux of the Waterside of Bray. Michel may be young, but he remains a classicist in inspiration and technique, and his 37 lunch menu, for three courses and coffee, including mineral water and half a bottle of a choice of house wines per head, offers both an object lesson in French grande bourgeoise cuisine and very reasonable value. I lunched at Le Gavroche with the slim, beautiful nutritional consultant Jane Clarke, whose recently published book Body Foods for Life is as clearly explained as it is attractively written and produced, and bears out Janes philosophy that healthy eating need not debar one from enjoying of food. She proved an enthusiastic and expert companion in the appreciation of Michel Rouxs cooking. After an interesting amuse-bouche of stuffed breast of chicken in a light curry sauce, Jane chose from the three starters an immaculate veloute of shellfish, with champagne in the veloute lifting the flavour of the fish most successfully. My starter was equally satisfying: a light rocket salad, dressed with a vinaigrette in which the truffle oil was not overassertive but simply a joy to taste, accompanying a deliciously crisp confit of belly of pork. With these we drank a half-bottle of excellent Alsatian Pinot Blanc de Blancs from Leon Beyer. Next Jane chose a shoulder of meltingly tender baby lamb, served with saffron and couscous which aroused her delight - `beautifully balanced was a phrase I heard among murmurs of enjoyment. My leg of hare `braised a lancienne was admirably prepared, richly flavoured, and accompanied by gorgeous pommes mousseline, but I did wonder whether it was slightly too heavy a dish for lunchtime. With these we took both the red wines offered at the kind suggestion of M. Giraldin, who wanted to demonstrate that his Bandol Mas de la Rouviere 95 yielded little to his Saint Emilion Chateau Vieux Sarpe 93. He was right. We finished with some excellent creme legere moka and delicious sorbets, then coffee with very good petits fours. It had been a most satisfying meal, not revolutionary or even especially inventive, but of a consistent quality that is what excellence is all about, and with no extras save the 1212 per cent service charge. Le Gavroches Carlton prize was well deserved, as was the comparatively full room.

UNTIL YESTERDAY the only knowledge Tiger Woods had of the venue for the 132nd Open Championship was from a few tapes of past Royal St Georges Opens provided by the Golf Channel. After spending a week in front of his television at home in Orlando, as well as on the practice range, the world No 1 experienced the links here for the first time yesterday afternoon. The geography lesson included the vital bit between tees and greens, while he will be hoping the prevailing wind blows in the next couple of days to give him a different look at the course. “You need to play a few rounds to get an idea of where you need to go,” Woods said. “There are a lot of blind shots, but you also have to take into account the different winds.” The firmness of the browning fairways reminded Tiger of St Andrews, where he won his only Open title three years ago. And he was quick identify the courses main defence.

Golfs governing bodies are to introduce a one-stroke penalty rule in an attempt to combat slow play. The words “slow play” are to appear in the rulebook for the first time from 1 January. Among the other changes coming into effect next year are ones that permit committees to make local rules to prohibit play from an environmentally sensitive area. A further amendment will deny a player relief when his stance, not the ball, is affected by casual water, ground under repair or certain damage to the course.

internet business
August 12th, 2008
E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet! Do you wonder why e-commerce, which is a direct result of Internet marketing, is experiencing explosive growth?
Not a day goes by without yet another article extolling the virtues of the Internet. An estimated 30 million worldwide users to date and more logging on every day. To the small business owner, the real question is, Where does the hype end and the reality begin? Is the Internet really a viable proposition for the traditional small business, normally constrained by lack of time, staff and money? 10 questions to ask yourself The best way to determine whether or not the Internet makes sense for your business is to apply a simple “yes” or “no” answer to 10 important marketing questions: 1. Do my clients require specific product information before they can buy my product/service? 2. Do I spend a majority of my time selling the benefits of my product only to be asked, “Can you send me more information?” 3. Is my long-distance phone bill more than $100 per month? 4. Have I lost business as a result of playing phone tag with a potential customer because I was unable to “sieze the moment?” 5. Would a new employee handling sales paperwork free me to increase my companys revenues? 6. Is there an international market for my product? 7. Does my product have a story to tell? 8. Am I spending more than 20 percent of every dollar I make on marketing-related expenses? 9. Would instant customer feedback benefit my business? 10. Would the ability to capture orders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, help my business? If you answered “yes” to just one of these questions, you should at least explore the possibilities that Internet commerce can offer. If you answered “yes” to five or more, you should dedicate some serious time and resources to finding out how the Internet actually works (and how it can work for you). If you answered “yes” to eight or more of the questions, you need a fast-track education about the Internet before your competitors claim the medium for themselves. The smart small business owner will make plans to explore the Internet, find out what the Web can deliver and then formulate a strategy to exploit it. As Jeff Vick, Marketing Specialist at Creative Video explains, “The Internet will do to business in the 21st century what the telephone did to business in the 20th century.” The Web — How does it work? According to Vick, the Internet works well as a commercial sales tool for businesses that need to exchange information in order to specify a particular products size, color, model, price, etc. Multiple orders can be booked, billed and fulfilled through a simple response mechanism included on an Internet site. Much of this information can be communicated through the Web. While it is actually only one portion of the Internet, the Web serves as an extensive reference library that can provide any level of additional information about a particular subject, issue, item or product. As in a spiders web configuration, the Web provides an ever-increasing source of interlocking information about the subject in question. Simply point and click and you can dive deeper into additional layers of information. The Web also has certain features that make it ideal for marketing. It can display pictures and massive amounts of text about your product as well as send and receive order information while at the same time generating a receipt. If your product requires a lengthy explanation in order to communicate its benefits, the Web is the place to do it. Customers and prospects can view that information at their own pace — in many instances, via sophisticated video and audio commercials. Since were talking digital information here, there is very little difference between one word and one thousand words. And if you feel that youre spending too much time processing paperwork and not enough time selling, a well-designed Web page may be one of the potential keys to your businesses future success. How important is e-mail? An important byproduct of the Internet is e-mail, or electronic mail. Once you learn to use this valuable tool, youll wonder how you ever got along without it. Forget about what time it is, or whether its “worth a call” — with e-mail, it costs no more to send a message to Sydney that it does to Syracuse (the actual cost is about $1.00 an hour). And time zones become irrelevant as well. You and the recipient can view the messages at your convenience, thereby eliminating the dreaded game of telephone tag. So get serious! How does the smart business operator approach the formidable and intimidating task of investigating the Net? First, gather your thoughts as to what you would like your Web site to accomplish. Imagine that your customer can ask you anything he/she wants to know about your company and product — anything from product price to employee birthdays — and in no particular order. Analyze each possible scenario and list all the information relevant to it. Then, and only then, begin to organize the scenarios into a flow chart. Once you have the flow chart polished, try to find flaws in it. If your customer is browsing through the pricing section of your flow chart, will he/she be more interested in going to shipping next or reading your companys mission statement? After you feel that youve developed a solid grasp of the different portions of the business that youd like to present to your clientele, you are now ready to interview potential agencies who are skilled in creating Web pages. According to Vick, there are 3 questions you should ask a potential Web page creator: 1. Have you done this before? 2. Who have you done this for? 3. May I call them? While creating some Web pages may require the skills of a computer Ph.D., most will not, and there are competent companies in most major markets capable of accomplishing the task in a cost-effective fashion. Prices for creating a simple Web site can range from a low of $2,500 to high of $20,000. In fact, some of the Fortune 500 marketers have created sophisticated and complex Web pages that can literally run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, the millions. But for the average small business, the investment will probably be in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. And remember, you must keep your Web site content fresh, or your prospects will have no reason to come back. Seeing your own World Wide Web site up and running on the Internet can be a proud moment for any business owner. It also can mean the start of a whole new way of doing business. It has the potential to increase productivity by extending operating time to a full 24 hours a day. But this will only happen if your business really needs this technology and can use it effectively. Evaluate your situation honestly. If its right for you, acquire it. If its not, save the money. And if you want to see what its all about, contact a Web creator and ask to see a demonstration. One picture is really worth 1,000 words. Alf Nucifora is an Atlanta based marketing consultant. He may be contacted by e-mail zubicon
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Internet presents both opportunities and challenges for marketers of healthcare products. An advocate for the medium argues for its increasing value in a comprehensive media mix, offers advice on how to make programs more productive, and cautions on Internet pitfalls. A similar, dramatic increase is occurring in Internet advertising. For all industries, including pharmaceuticals, total 1997 online revenues reached $1 billion. The Internet Advertising Bureau projects this figure rising to $2 billion in 1998, $5 billion in the year 2000, and $9 billion by 2002.

Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. When it comes to preventing a heart attack or stroke, little changes will cumulatively pay big dividends.
Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

As your new president, I face a challenging task when it comes to speaking to you about school finance. Let me give you my dilemma. It is the end of the school year as I write this piece and I am reflecting on the uncertain state of school finances in coming months and what these financial challenges mean for us as school system leaders. You will share my frustration that as many as half the nations students may be directly shortchanged of the education they deserve, with the remainder not immune to the impact of belt tightening. As bad as that news is, last year at this time NCSL found 36 states with budget gaps. On the other hand, NCLB and IDEA could be funded retroactively, which would help make up for last years budget shortfalls that resulted from unfunded or underfunded mandates. If you are a school leader in one of the rare districts whose state legislature decided this summer to support quality education with adequate funding for all your schools, the future must look bright, so you can skip the remainder of this column. If youre not in that sunny camp, please continue and let me share my thoughts.

The smallest number of domestic vacationers (8 percent) travel between 500 and 599 miles. Since 84 percent of all vacation trips utilize a car, truck, or recreational vehicle, and 54 percent of all family trips include kids, its easy to see why 599 miles isnt a terribly popular travel distance, falling just after Im so bored I could scream and a little before I want to go home. According to the TIAs forecast, 63 percent of Americans intended to do some vacation travelling this summer, a number that has remained fairly stable during the past six years - as has the number of people for whom vacation travel means trips to the bathroom - 14 percent of those polled by the TIA predicted they would be spending their vacation time going nowhere in the summer of 1999. The reason? Money, for one.
The poll also lists the top five components travelers are looking for in a family vacation, which are cost, safety, sightseeing opportunities, reliably good weather and opportunities for recreation.

While I cant speak for Douglas Cotant (Readers Forum, Oct. 17), I certainly endorse his position that the Salt Lake City police should do more to enforce the posted city ordinance against skateboarding, in-line skating and bicycle riding on sidewalks from 200 East to 400 West and from North Temple to 500 South. It is simply a matter of safety to the many visitors and elderly using the sidewalks as well as a matter of protecting the beautiful but often damaged planters and tiled sidewalk interchanges caused by the skateboarders. David Blaine Magic Tricks

When youre the smallest kid in the class it helps to have a few tricks up your sleeve. But now the skills that Steven Frayne, 23, used as a schoolboy in Bradford to keep the other kids off his back and himself out of trouble are paving his way to stardom. He was brought up by his mother and rarely saw his father. He was also diagnosed with Crohns disease, a chronic stomach condition, as a child. But now, global fame beckons for Dy-namo, who has signed a major deal with Warner Vision International for the worldwide distribution rights to his next DVD, scheduled for release this November. He is also the star of the video “Hands”, the new single from the Raconteurs, out today. It seems that Dynamo, often referred to as Britains answer to David Blaine, will soon be rivalling the Americans success. Senior vice-president of Warner Vision International, Frank Brunger, said that they would also produce a TV version of the production and distribute it digitally. “We were attracted to work with Dynamo simply because of his talent and the effect it has on other people. He came and did some magic here in our offices and all the staff were gobsmacked,” he said.

FOR YEARS the magic industry has managed to protect intellectual property without any recourse to patent, copyright, or trade secret law, according to a study by Jacob Loshin of Yale Law School, to be published next year in Law and Magic, a forthcoming anthology from Carolina Academic Press. But the usual legal means of protecting ideas dont work for magic. You cant copyright a method for pulling off a trick. Patenting, which some magicians tried in the 19th century, requires revealing the secret in a public forum. And since magicians have a culture that includes a fair amount of sharing among themselves, trade secret law, which is mostly aimed at protecting ideas from competitors in the same field, doesnt work well for magic either.

Humphrey Ocean and John Tchalenko Sci-Art Project (Wellcome Trust). The National Portrait Gallery, London, until 13 June The first surprising finding is that Ocean looks at his model in the same way that he views a person to whom he is talking. He starts by focusing on the eyes. His observations of the model are carefully targeted, making on average 12 fixations a minute on the models face, compared with about 140 fixations when he is not drawing. The number of eye movements made by the non-artists while they work are similar to the painters when he is not drawing, and they are far less deliberate.
Ideally, go to Venice to see Tiepolo this autumn while there is a magnificent exhibition, celebrating the tercentenary of the painters birth, at the Ca Rezzonico. That palazzo — usually the Museum of Eighteenth Century Venetian Art - is consequently as thronged as it can have been since Cole Porter threw parties there in the Twenties. Next spring more or less the same show moves to New York, but it will not be, could not possibly be the same because in and around Venice numerous other palaces, churches and institutions form a parallel, permanent exhibition of Tiepolo. You are encouraged, rightly, to visit these too, in conjunction with the exhibition. The visiting paintings amplify and illuminate the resident ones to make this a unique opportunity to see this extraordinarily fecund painter whole. One comes away convinced that Tiepolo was a towering figure in European art. Such praise might come as a surprise to those who visited the Glory of Venice at the Royal Academy two years ago. There Tiepolo was pitted against his contemporary and rival G.B. Piazzetta, altarpiece for altarpiece, and did not come off all that well. The slow-working Piazzetta, inclined to a dun-coloured palette, seemed the more serious and the deeper of the two. Though there were fine Tiepolos on display, in comparison he seemed - as he often has to earnest Northern Europeans - brilliant, but also distastefully insipid and sugary. A visit to Venice puts one right about that. It demonstrates very quickly that even a largish selection of portable paintings such as was at the RA gives only a partial impression of Tiepolos gifts. A major problem is that much of his finest work was - to use the ugly jargon of the present day - `site-specific. That is to say, it was painted for a particular place, and, indeed, in the case of a fresco indissolubly linked with its structure. There is no substitute for going to that building and standing opposite, or more often in Tiepolos case beneath the painting.
Which goes to show how much the popular images of Lennon and McCartney have clouded the truth. Leaving aside the merits of McCartneys paintings - of which more later - and the fact that he doesnt claim anything much for them at all, the idea that he knows nothing of serious art just doesnt stand up. McCartney was always more radical than he seemed; always, perhaps, the most radical Beatle. Even in the groups heyday, he was intimately involved with the contemporary art scene. “I dont want to get into one of those `Na-na-na-na-nah, I did it first things,” he says today, “but I was living a very rich avant-garde life at that time. The thing is that when I got into it, I just got on and did it. I never talked about it. Then when John got into the scene with Yoko, he jumped into it and made a big thing about it.” One of McCartneys closest friends in those days was the art dealer Robert Fraser, whom he describes today as “a formative art influence”. Through Fraser, McCartney got to know artists including Claes Oldenburg, Richard Hamilton and Peter Blake. “I was into that whole scene,” he recalls. “The point was that I could. The other guys were married and living out near Weybridge, but I was on my own in this big house in St Johns Wood. It got to be almost like a salon at times - showing movies Id made to Antonioni, getting into Stockhausen, meeting Luciano Berio, Robert Fraser bringing Andy Warhol over to watch Empire [Warhols eight-hour film of the Empire State Building].”

TOKYO, July 18 Kyodo A 38-year-old Japanese diplomat assigned to the Japanese mission to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) was killed early Monday in an auto accident in a southwestern suburb of Paris, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday. Koji Ikeda, a first secretary, and his 5-year-old son Kotaro died while his 32-year-old wife Naomi suffered minor injuries in the accident, which took place on a highway linking Orleans and Paris, according to the ministry.
Dear Readers: If you are involved in an auto accident, being able to document it with photos can be invaluable. Take every angle necessary to show any damage to your car or any other car involved. Be sure to get license plates, too. If you have a cell phone that has a camera, great! If not, a disposable camera would do the trick. It will be very helpful when dealing with the insurance claims. Just keep one in your purse or briefcase. Dont leave it in the glove compartment, where temperature changes, especially high heat, might damage the film. Dear Heloise: Here is what we do at our office, which provides packets of dry hot chocolate or hot cocoa. We pour the packet of dry mix in a cup, and instead of hot water, we pour in coffee. The Therapists Notebook for Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Clients offers therapists treating lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients innovative, practical interventions plus homework and hands-on activities tailored to these populations. Use the notebook to explore the issues surrounding coming out, homophobia in the workplace, spirituality, identity formation, and issues that require a non-heterosexist approach, such as domestic violence and relationship concerns. Grounded in current theory, each chapter explains the rationale for the activity it proposes, includes contraindications, and provides a list of helpful resources for therapists and clients. If you are new to treating lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients, you will find rich material, based in current literature, to guide your work. If you have already worked extensively with lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients, the activities and fresh, innovative strategies will expand and invigorate your skills.
When therapist and client differ in sexual orientation, there is an initial sense of “otherness” that must be bridged in building a therapeutic relationship. Each needs to become aware of the panoply of assumptions, inferences, and emotions that adhere to the image of the other, both as an actual individual and as a representative of another culture. Each must also assess how he or she is perceived by the other, differentiating how one sees oneself from how one is defined by the larger culture. The shared experience of the therapeutic encounter sensitively negotiated-the “intimate interaction” that Weingarten (1992, p. 45) defines as occurring “when people share meaning or co-create meaning”-bridges that otherness, creating connection without obliterating difference. This article will address how straight marital and family therapists (MFTs) can bridge differences in sexual orientation to work effectively with gay and lesbian families and couples. To be effective in working with clients whose cultural background differs from ones own, it is widely accepted that a therapist needs to become culturally literate, developing familiarity with the clients heritage and milieu. This includes being aware of the “power differentials in society and the ways that they may affect the therapy process and the clients day to day life” (Greene, 1995, p. 155). This is no less true when these differences revolve around sexual orientation than when they concern race, ethnicity, or social class. Straight MFTs working with gays and lesbians must be willing to examine themselves, their own privilege as heterosexuals, and their attitudes, feelings, and beliefs about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. They also need to adopt a cross-cultural perspective in working therapeutically with those whose sexual orientation differs from their own. (The use of the terms gay and lesbian to discuss how culture is constructed along lines of sexual orientation is not meant to exclude bisexuals or transgender people; it is used only to avoid the unwieldy prose that would follow from the more inclusive list.)

In some cases, a stepparent will legally adopt his or her spouses children from a previous marriage. The biological father or mother must either be absent with no legal claim to custody, or must grant permission for the stepparent to adopt.
In situations where a single parent lives with someone outside of marriage, that person may be referred to as a co-parent. Co-parent is also the name given to the partner in a homosexual relationship who shares the household and parenting responsibilities with a childs legal adoptive or biological parent.
The home which was owned by the family prior to a divorce or separation is referred to as the family home in many state laws. In court settlements of divorce and child custody issues, the sale of the family home may be prohibited as long as the minor children are still living there with the custodial parent. The sale of the home may be permitted (or required to pay the noncustodial parent his or her share of its value) if the custodial parent moves or remarries, or when the children leave home to establish their own residences.
The term extended family traditionally meant the biological relatives of a nuclear family; i.e., the parents, sisters, and brothers of both members of a married couple. It was sometimes used to refer to the people living in the household beyond the parents and children. As family relationships and configurations have become more complex due to divorce and remarriage, extended family has come to refer to all the biological, adoptive, step-, and half-relatives.
Government agencies and other statistics-gathering organizations use the term head of household to refer to the person who contributes more than half of the necessary support of the family members (other than the spouse); in common usage, the head of household is the person who provides primary financial support for the family.

Medical coverage for seniors STRONG POINTS: major medical/surgical services, cancer and heart care, rehabilitation services WHAT IS NEEDED: more primary-care physicians in general, geriatricians in particular, and doctors who will accept Medicare patients (problems that also face many U.S. communities) THIS SAYS IT ALL: “If you move aging parents to this community, the No. 1 block is that they dont have a primary-care doctor.” - Max Morton, director of prevention and wellness services for Penrose-St. Francis Health Learning Center.
Monday May 5, 2003 will go down in history as a day to remember in employment law. It was the day the long-debated amendments to the Health Safety in Employment Act finally came into effect. Why is this new legislation so important? The term “workplace stress” took on a whole new significance, with new obligations for employers, and potentially serious financial consequences for those who ignore them. Workplace stress is no longer simply a sad fact of life. It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. A cursory reading of the new legislation might be enough to instantly treble employers workplace stress, but a deeper understanding goes some way to restoring mental equilibrium. The Occupational Safety and Health booklet, Healthy work, Managing Stress in the Workplace, tells employers that “there is only a requirement to manage work stressors or the individuals stressed situation where you can be reasonably expected to know about the stress. Even then the obligation is only to do what is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.”
